Caring for a person in need of permanent care requires a lot of resources - emotionally, physically and financially. Often, this care work is taken on by the relatives themselves, because the home carer service is not provided in all municipalities or is provided only minimally, there is a shortage of labour, and there are insufficient funds to pay the person themselves. Thus, Latvian society often loses whole people - family members - who take care of a relative. In situations where a carer is not provided or the family cannot afford it, people are often forced to leave their jobs, are isolated from society, fall into financial difficulties and become depressed because they are tied to the person they are caring for.
How can we change this situation and ensure a dignified life for the person in care, their relatives and carers?
Thank you to all participants!
