"Talking does not solve anything. It seems as if things are obvious, but 33 years since the restoration of independence, nothing has been solved by silence, so this time we will consider talking, not silence, as gold," says Ilze Zosule, member of the board of the Hospiss LV foundation.
"The Death Café will host eight discussions over two days, suited to the format and atmosphere of the festival, for example - how to live when you receive a diagnosis that could mean death ("Hold on, my friend"); how to be with a terminally ill person until the last breath ("Next to death"); how we can each prepare for dying, for death, to ease the mourning of loved ones and to experience a dignified end of life ("An escape plan"); what do extreme people who choose every day to "walk on a knife's edge" think about death ("I am not afraid of the wolf"); is it possible to die utterly stupid ("Dying stupidly")? At the end of the festival, we will discuss Latvian folklore and history, play games and sing to understand the ancient Latvian notion of the afterlife. The talks will be moderated and attended by several well-known people, such as traveller and book author Zane Eniņa, mountaineers Kristīne and Kristaps Liepiņi, businessman and extremist Ingus Augstkalns, journalist Kristīne Anže, musician Gatis Irbe, cultural project producer Sondra Zaļupe, professor Janīna Kursīte, Latvian tradition experts Iveta and Vidvuds Medeņi and others. Friday evening's "Death Café" will also feature a Free Chair, where any member of the audience can take a seat.
