The event was opened with welcoming remarks by Liene Stepena, a physiotherapist at Kuldīga Hospital and the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, who shared how her journey in volunteer work began. Andris Aniņš, Chairman of the Board of Kuldīga Hospital, presented his vision for this collaboration and emphasized the importance of volunteer work in supporting palliative care patients, providing not only medical care but also emotional support. Meanwhile, Sanita Fišmeistere, the head nurse of the Therapy Department, spoke about the department's daily challenges and how this upcoming charity initiative has already improved the mood of existing patients and eased the workload of the staff.
"Hospiss LV" representative and volunteer coordinator Sintija Reinberga introduced the aspects and challenges of volunteer work, offering encouragement to new volunteers. Following this, Liene Stepena and Zane Cinglere, volunteer coordinators from Kuldīga and Ventspils, shared their experiences regarding motivation and working in palliative care. An overview of the "Festive Table" project, its organization, and planning was presented, highlighting the importance of collaboration between volunteers and medical staff.
Liene Stepena shared: "It is always touching to see how much patients appreciate and look forward to visits from hospice volunteers, saying goodbye with tears of gratitude in their eyes. These are such genuine emotions and heartfelt glances that deeply move the strings of human kindness. And this feeling is what keeps us coming back to do this work again and again. This volunteer work is the most powerful school of personal growth, where the teachers are these seriously ill patients. Being by their side, one can feel immense respect and gratitude, and often these encounters truly help us to get to know ourselves, our fears, and our perception of the world."
A warm festive atmosphere was created by musician Renārs Kaupers, who gave a musical performance during the opening event and later accompanied volunteers to visit patients in the department.
After a group photo and signing of volunteer agreements, the "Festive Table" was set up—various treats on carts, including "Inese's Cakes," "Druva Ice Cream," and other snacks or special delicacies. Those new volunteers who had already completed training joined experienced Hospice representatives to meet patients in the department and gain hands-on experience with the "Festive Table" initiative.
